Erlanger is named in honor of the Baron Frederic Emile D'Erlanger, the chief financier of the land syndicate created to develop the city.
Much of Erlanger's history is intertwined with the Southern Railroad. The Southern Railroad Depot building, built in 1877, is now the Erlanger Historical Society Depot Museum. Housing an extensive collection of locomotive and railroad memorabilia within, the Southern Railroad Depot is the last remaining wooden railroad depot structure from Cincinnati to Chattanooga, Tennessee.
A number of historic homes play an important role in Erlanger tourism. The Timberlake Home, on the National Register of Historic Places, was built around 1826 for physician Dr. William Timberlake. The Hauerkamp Home, built at the end of the American Civil War, was owned and occupied by a number of important Erlanger politicians and town trustees until the 1970s. The Castleman Home was the dwelling place of Ben Castleman, who owned the farm where undefeated 1977 Triple Crown-winning thoroughbred Seattle Slew was foaled.
Erlanger also features the historic Kuchle Blacksmith's Shop, the 19th century Union Church, the Scheben Hotel and Cafe, and the Forrest Lawn Cemetery which was originally part of the Caleb Manly Mansion.
The Heritage Day Festival, celebrating and honoring Erlanger's history, is held each year on the third weekend in September at the Southern Railroad Depot Museum.
